Re: Got any MONEY-SAVING Secret Sources?

I am looking forward to this issue. I have a 80 year old home that needs a lot of TLC. I lost my job 2 years ago and money is tight. The town I live in is economically depressed. I have tried the ReStore but they don't have items old enough for my house. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Ditto to all the great suggestions, especially the Habitat Store. I have spent about 30 thousand over the past 5 years, and I figure for every dollar I spend, I save another at least. Everything else pales in comparison, Freecycle, craigslist are gerat too. I have bought things from Caravati's ( architectural salvage in Richmond VA) but feel like I pay fair but not cheap price.

One of the best resources to be found is the Internet! See something you like (tools, appliances, shelving, gingerbread accents, cabinet hardware, sink and bath fixtures)? I've bought all these things AND MORE online. In some cases, up to $100 cheaper.

Just do your research. Make sure it's the same model number of the item you want. Be sure to add tax and shipping into your equation. Also, consider the time and effort you save running around picking items up when you have these things delivered to your door instead.

Not to mention, the Internet is open 24 hours ...

Re: Got any MONEY-SAVING Secret Sources?

I have several places that when I am working on a project or just planning one I took to as a source.
1. Urban Miners in New Haven, Ct.
2. The ReConnstruction Store in New Britian, Ct.
3. Both Habitat For Humanities in my area Danbury/ Stratford, Ct.
4. The Craigslist

I am a regular at the all the retail place and they have wish lists, so if you are looking for something specific they will even call you when they get it in. I have always loved recycling things and these places help me to recycle and complete my projects on a budget.

Bought the house next door to disassemble to obtain fixtures, wood flooring, framing lumber, cabinates, ....
and will end up with a great lot to sell or garden on in small town in Nebraska.
The Good Will, ARC, Salvation Army stores get some salvaged items and are re sold for pennies on the dollar.
The best recycling- re using.

One place you have to check out in the Greater Rochester, NY area is "ReHouse, Inc." (http://www.rehouseny.com/). These folks walk into a building that is about to be demolished and strip it of all its architectural features (doors, hardware, cabinets, etc.). I rehab apartments(check out www.redmaplepropertiesllc.com), using a lot of the materials ReHouse, Inc. has to offer. Their collection of window sashes is unsurpassed by any local dealer! Quite often they will run "Free Fridays" in an effort to thin out their inventory, giving away unique items that they haven't been able to sell.

The best part about ReHouse, Inc. is their staff. They're always so helpful and friendly. Where else can you shop for an antique pedestal sink while enjoying a free home-made oatmeal cookie?

Community Forklift is a great place to get hard to find molding and kitchen cabinets both new and used. I posted about this place before but see my post was moved as it as far as I know is only in Maryland. Bladensburg Maryland to be exact and while I didn't want to buy anything I thought what they had was great and worth repeating. This is something like Habitat Restores in that they are a charity and accept all kinds of building materials for donations. I think they also work on homes in trying to get peoples homes repaired who are low income but I am not really sure about that. Anyway to find out more here again is their website http://www.communityforklift.com. Happy bargain hunting!:)

[ I wait every year and do the Bargins-A-Glore Hwy 64 yard sales across the state of Arkansas every August. You can get materials for building and really nice furniture for next to nothing prices. 120 miles of yard sales. Believe me I have stock my whole new place with everything from pillow cases to wall paper at prices starting from 10 cents - to no more than $30. Its a year of waiting, but I make a list and I usual fill it bargin shopping. You wait till the last day and people will give it to you jsut to get rid of it. Can't beat this system.
