Gfci outlet

I replaced a GFCI outlet with a new one. It is almost impossible to plug or unplug anything due to the strong grip on the plug. Is this normal for newer outlets? If not, is there a way to safely loosen up the metal contacts?

They should be snug but not super hard to plug or unplug .
Don't bother trying to loosen them up. Go back to where you bought it and check out others in the store by plugging in to see if they are the same. If you find one that's better return the one you have for that one.

Agreed, it should not be hard to unplug an outlet. It should be firm not not hard. The new tamper resistant outlets seem to be a little harder if you do not pull straight out but again it should not be hard.
