Gap between lawn and foundation wall?

In the summer months when it's very dry, I notice a gap about 3/4" to 1" between my lawn and my foundation wall. I know I have a lot of clay so it tends to shrink. I want to improve the soil so water drains and it doesn't freeze and expand against my basement wall. Any thoughts or suggestions? Has anyone else seen this? Thanks, Dave.

Howdy in Southern Colorado we had Bentonite clay soil would shrink like this and expand back again when rain or snow. You could pour some sand down the crack. or lay down viaqueen and multch over it.. roto till a bunch of sand into clay will loosen it too.
