Gap between crown molding and ceiling

My house was built in 1959 and we are doing some work ourselves in the kitchen (painting pine cabinets etc.). We have 2-1/4 inch crown moulding and there is an approximately 1 inch gap between the top of the moulding and the ceiling in part of the room. I have been told this is due to the house settling. What can we do to fix this?

*** 1" is a lot of settlement. Can you attach a picture ?

It probably isn't an inch. More in some spots. See picture
