Floor Sanding

I am working with a hard wood floor that was covered up by tiling. I have pulled up old square tiles and have removed much of the black adhesive. There is still some residue of black adhesive. Apparently the wood floor was finished at some point. Is there anything someone can recomend to remove the rest of the adheisve and prepare the floor for stain and finish? I am looking for the least labor intesive method, and I don't want to spend a fortune as this is a small area about 7x12. I also need a solution that I personally can execute, so the option of a drum sander is out since this room is on the second floor and I would not be able to lift the sander up the stairs. Thanks!
