Fireplace upgrade

Hello all,

Recently purchase a home in Wisconsin, built in 1961. It has an awesome fireplace that is open on 3 sides. It was a nice lannon stone fireplace, but the previous owners essentially ruined it by painting it very poorly. Ultimately the stone itself and design are dated and we'd like to give this thing a face lift.

Is there a way to face lift this without removing the stone? I was thinking of essentially evening out the stone with mortar or something similar so that I could then put up a backer board of some kind and then tile over it or put a new stone over it.

Just looking for some ideas at this point.
