Fireplace insert, insulation enough?

Hello all,
I have a house where the builder left the fireplace unfinished. The chimney looks in great shape, there is no flue, no doors. Just brick. The last owner had nothing in the hole but cut an opening in the brick and had a heat duct run up from the basement. I can look right to the basement as it is now  There is also four bricks missing in the back of the opening with cinder block behind.

What I want to know is if I purchase a wood burning insert will I have to close up this opening, replace the bricks or is the insulation in the new inserts enough?
