Firepit base Question

I'm going to be putting in a firepit in my backyard.
I looked at the how to guide at TOH, and it said dig 12" for base with the width of your 1st stone. and fill it with 6" of gravel then another 6"s of gravel.

I went to Home depot and they said I only need to dig a few inches and fill it with gravel.

Does anyone know which way would be better? or can I get away with only a 2" gravel base?

P.S sorry if this is in the wrong thread, First time poster.

I don't think that there is a set depth, but 2" sound too shallow to me and 12" overkill. You can probably get away with 6" of gravel.

Ya both of those sound too extreme. I'd aim for 5-6"

6 inches of base is plenty. I would suggest a drain in it depending on your subsoil
