Exterior Wood Trim

Hi Everyone,
I live in the greater boston area and am renovating an old queen. One project is painting/staining the exterior of the house. The house has been painted many times and the window trim, while decorative, it lost some of its luster from severe peeling and chipping through the years. I wanted to replace the wood trim with similar trim - but when I go to home depot and some lumber yards they are shocked that I would look for exterior wood trim. They only have composite/pvc trim, which would not go with this house. I understand this is more upkeep, but I believe its within the character of the home. Any suggestions on places that might be a good resource to find exterior wood trim? Thanks for your help!!

Re: Exterior Wood Trim

Few stores or lumberyards have decent trim lumber, but a good lumberyard can order what you need- tell them you want a "select" grade. If that approach doesn't work you'll have to find a nearby sawmill who will cut and dry to order. Neither will be cheap :(

Alternately if you have time, you might find old salvage lumber or get some from and old house that is being de-constructed.

Today we use trim lumber that we would have culled for framing when I got m6y start because that's all we can get. A sad commentary on Carpentry today indeed.
