The cheap butyl used to be sold in 'dollar stores' and the like, and until sometime in the 70's some paint stores still carried it. Not the same formulas you're talking about Spruce and Ordjen, but it was oil-based butyl and there any resemblance ends. In 5 years this junk turned hard as a rock but always managed to stick as toughly to one side or the other. I still run across it occasionally in some of the cheap old rentals my biggest customer renovates and I still hate it- has to be cut with a saw or chiseled out. Nobody with any good sense used the stuff but not everybody has good sense. Most of what I encounter now is some form of latex which is a hundred times easier to remove and re-do.

Well, there's your problem! You don't buy caulking at the dollar store! :p
