exterior painting of cypress

I have recently installed new cypress railing system and porch posts on my old house. My contractor recommended cypress over other materials for it's durability, but did not mention anything about painting it. Upon visiting a local paint store I was told that cypres is very difficult to paint. What are your recommendations for a durable exterior finish in west central Georgia?

Cypress is primed with an oil based primer. Due to the heavy amount of natural oils in the cypress, additional turpentine and benzole can be added to aid in penetrating through the inherent cypress oils. The finish coat can be an acrylic/latex paint.

Lumber of less than 10% moisture is generally safe to paint. Over 12% moisture, some failure will probably occur. Unfortunately, you need a moisture meter to know for sure, but if it feels moist, let it dry out.
