Extending Deck Posts for a Privacy Screen or Pergola

I live in Kentucky, and I'd like to extend my 4x4 deck posts without replacing them completely in order to build a pergola over the deck. How do I extend them in the best manner to ensure a solid structure (e.g., overlapping joints, metal joiners, etc.)? The deck is about 3-feet off the ground.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Is there a Search input field for the forums, and if so, where is it located?

How high are they now?

Do they stop below the deck, come up to the railings?

If they come 3 or 4 feet above the deck floor, you could probably sister them together with plenty of carriage bolts.

Search: I don't see it either. In a pinch, you can use Google's site search feature:

term site:siteyouwanttosearch.com

example:

finds this post.
