exposed brick wall in bathroom

I recently purchased a 100 year old house that was renovated in 2004. There is an exposed brick wall in the bathroom next to the shower. As far as I can tell, it is not sealed. Some of the bricks are crumbling, and there some white fuzz in the cracks of the crumbling bricks that look like efflorescence. From various sites on the internet, I was planning on cleaning the brick and sealing it to prevent any damage. Is this a good idea or is there another way to treat this issue? Thank you for any advice you may have.
