dividing open concept rooms with trimwork

Hello,

I'd like to paint my first floor that is open concept. The problem is the dining room wall runs across into the parlor. In the center of the wall is the front door. I thought trimwork about 6 inches away from each side of the door , like six inch wide trim going up to the ceiling with blocks at the top, would make a good dividing line do I could use different color paint for the dining room and parlor. A decorator was by and said just run the door trim to the ceiling. Does anyone have suggestions/ideas where I can find designs for this? Or any other suggestions.

Thanks again,
A. Airhead
