Distressing parquet wood floor

Okay, the floor is NOT distressed, but the owner IS! How in the world do I DO this?! I've tried gouging, then using a darker stain for the exposed wood. But is looks like it has dark gouges in it, NOT the sort of thing that a prospective buyer would look at and say, "Oooo, what a floor - that's it, our search for the perfect house is now complete!"

Do I keep gouging? Is it inSANE to treat a parquet floor this way? Is there ANYone who can help?
