Re: Disconnected old wires and circuit is now dead

What are all wires on the GFCI?

Also is there 120v between the black and white of the 3 wire cable ?

Yes there is between the black and white in the three wire cable.

The GFCI has black, white and a bare ground. There are a lot of wires in the GFCI box with the switch and it looks like the blacks have been run together and the whites as well.

What wires are at the light fixture?

these wires are attached to the "line" connections?
Are there any wires attched to the "load" connections?

The neutral shouldn't be connected to a regular toggle single pole switch.

The three wires going into the box with GFCI and toggle switch: red goes into the toggle switch by itself; black is pigtailed with black wires running to the GFCI and toggle switch, and white is pigtailed with the other whites and then into the GFCI but not connected to the toggle switch. There's a new Romex 3 wire coming into the box on the other side: the white is pigtailed in with the other whites, the black goes into the toggle switch only, and the ground is on the ground screw on the box.

I thought I had checked the far left box, the one with just two wires, and apparently I didn't. I checked and i have power when i touch the black and white in that box as well. Can I just cap these, do I need to cap them together to end the circuit?

What wires are at the light?

Re: Disconnected old wires and circuit is now dead

I have no light. The boxes were not connected to anything except the wires in the box. There is a toggle switch at the wall for the overhead light, which doesn't work along with theGFCI. There has not been a light connected to either of these small boxes for at least 11 years; just wires sitting in a space in the wall that I messed with.

First cap the wires in the left box individually. Then after the power is on push the reset on the GFCI and see if it is then live. If that works turn off the power and wire nut the red wire in the right box to the black wires. Turn the power back on reset the GFCI and see if the switch will the turn on and off the overhead light.

i capped the left individually. I have the right with black to black and white to white with red by itself. I reset the GFCI, but no power to the GFCI or the switches. Should i put the red with the black ones and leave the whites together in the right box? That is one option I know I haven't tried.

uhmmm -------It's understood there are no fixtures at the old hidden boxes since they were hidden --I was asking about the existing light.
