The "big box" stores will always have a disadvantage to the local paint store.

The ONLY reason that a big box is at a disadvantage to other suppliers is due solely to their business model. My supplier of choice was Lumberjack/Payless/Cashways, they were a nation wide chain that catered to both the handy homeowner AND contractors. I could go to any store in any town and get the same high quality, professional service, whether at the contractors counter or the front of the store. Like you, the employees were knowledgeable about what they were selling. I am a "one stop" shopper, and they knew that, and did their best to source anything I ever needed, or had referrals to other suppliers if they couldn't. They knew how to treat professionals, and made the shopping experience as quick and easy as possible, such as a drive through lumberyard with a cashier at the gate.

I sometimes feel like a voice out crying in the wilderness when talking to my managers about service. Certainly price is of concern , but as far as I was concerned, SERVICE was the determining factor of where I did business. A contractor is selling his knowledge and skill in units of time. Time wasted standing in line at a big box store costs him dearly. My business was mainly upper end residential painting. A minor variance in the cost of the actual paint was almost immaterial.

This is the absolute #1 reason why I hate Home Depot with a passion! They are a complete waste of time, a 10 minute stop easily turns into 30 or more because you can't find what you're looking for, there is no help, or there are not enough open cashier lanes. I will drive further and pay more to avoid Evil Orange. They don't deserve my money or my time. My experience with Lowes is far better, and my preference when given a choice. I do miss the days of having a real supply house though.
