The dry winter air in my new apartment is causing cracks in a wooden bench made from yakal wood (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shorea_astylosa). Pictures are in the links below:
This bench was in a storage locker for over 10 years without any of this damage, so I am not sure why this is happening now. It was from my mother, who recently passed away, so I really want to take care of it and prevent any more damage.
I am in Wisconsin. I have put bowls of water by my heater to evaporate so that there will be more moisture in the air. I also applied furniture oil to the whole bench, as well as mayonnaise on the cracks (which I read about online).
My questions are:
- Is anything else I can do to prevent the cracks from getting worse?
- Should I store it out of my apartment to prevent the cracks from getting worse this winter?
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.
