Cracks in textured ceiling

How do I repair cracks in a ceiling that has been textured? I read the article about using drywall screws, screening and then replastering the area. With the ceiling being textured, how do I get the drywall into the cracks without going too heavy with the "mud" and then having that crack when it dries? Can I use the rope stuff in the cracks to fill the void and then just dab the mud on and stipple that area with a brush? I would appreciate any help you can give me.
