Cracks in drywall and settling of house

We own a 4 year old Stucco ranch with solid concreate slab, that was built on fill dirt. We have noticed over the last year that we are starting to get cracking in our dry wall. These cracks run not only vertical but horizontal. My husband said it is due to the settling of the lot and there is not much we can do about it. My question is there a certian type of crack that would indicate a larger problem. What should we watch for with settling and what type of crack line would be bad. We live in a dry climate is there a special way we should fix these cracks to prevent them from coming back in the future? Thanks for your help in advace.
