Re: controlling humidity

Running a dehumidifier in the basement will basically cover that area .... too much of a stretch to cover the upstairs as well.

Chaces are though the basement is slightly more humid, and that's flowing into the rest of the house. If you can dry out the air in the basement, it just might help the upstairs, too.

If you can, try to identify if there's one area of the basement that's more humid than another. Especially if you notice a musty smell in one particular area. Put the dehumidifier in the dampest area; that's where it will do the most good. You want to get rid of the humidity before it gets to another part of the house.

Make sure all of your exhaust fans go to the outside, and not into a joist bay or the attic. Set up a timer on a basement exhaust fan to run a couple of hours a day.

the basement is free of odors, and the floor is always dry
"BUT",i do have a sump pump for the foundation drain, the sump well is never empty,,so the sump well is probably the source of the humidity .

You can also try Damp Rid Products. They work wonders! Just set them around the house where you seem smell the musty odors the most. Can be hidden under tables or beds so no one can see them. Also make bags that you can hang in your closets.
