collecting rain from downspout?

I saw RC install a rain barrel on one episode. I wondered if any of you have tried this and how efficient it is. I found some whiskey barrels that have the downspout attachment and the spigot at the bottom. I figured I could just attach a soaker hose to it and water my shrubs and other plants. I just want to know if this is the way to go or are there other rain collection systems that work better.

Re: collecting rain from downspout?

Whiskey barrels sound fine to me unless they are treated with something that might leech into the water and cause ground water contamination.

Heck, even the plastic barrels are supposed to be bad to store water in according to an NBC report I heard last night.

Most often I have seen the plastic barrels and I'm thinking about getting one for one place in around my house, maybe two places.

I love the idea.
