Ceramic Tile in Shower

I am installing 12" ceramic tile in a shower that I built. I used 1/2" Hardibacker board on the walls. I've heard to use Mastic and I have heard to use VersaBond thin set. What are the pros and cons of both?

Re: Ceramic Tile in Shower

Mastic is ready to go and may actually hold the tile in place until it sets. Versabond needs to be mixed by you (not loose)and will definitely not hold the weight of the tile (you will need shims or spacers as you go up), however it has a stronger bond when cured, and is less susceptible to water penetration. On a wall with no water, mastic for sure. Else, "if it were my house" I'd go with Versabond, 1/4 X 1/4 notch minimum.
