what is the proper mixture for floating cement on new shower walls that are just studs?

Hire a tile contractor, because you obviously shouldn't be doing this on your own.

Mortar and thin set on walls need something to hang on to, like a metal mesh. You also need a moisture barrier.

But you can make your life a lot easier by attaching Cement Board Units, screwed on to the studs and providing a nice base for the tiles.

Done right - you'll have a nice shower. But done wrong - you'll have a nightmare.

If you insist on doing this yourself, educate yourself first, go to youtube and watch some vids.

Not every Pro is capable or good at floating 'mud' walls.

Heading to the John Bridge Tile forum is an excellent idea.
