Can anyone weigh in on the effectiveness of cellular window shades? We are lured by advertising promises of warmth and are considering buying them for the whole house, but have some considerations. Our 1870 home in Upstate NY has original windows topped by storms of very poor quality. The windows themselves are not in great shape, though my husband has caulked and sealed around them. We are considering replacing them altogether when we restore the clapboard siding in a few years, so we're not sure about plunking down thousands of dollars for cellular shades, not knowing if we can reuse them (due to fit) on new windows. Last winter we put that shrink-wrap plastic over some windows and it was helpful, but looked awful. Right now we have minimal window coverings, mostly because we can't make a decision, but also because the windows are gorgeous and we don't want to cover them with draperies. The cell shades would allow the millwork to still be visible, but would they be a worthwhile investment?
