Ceiling height code?

I understand that the code for the base of a light fixture is 7'6" above finished floor (AFF). However, a contractor I am working with says he can have the ceiling at 7' in one area of the space, by code. How does this work? The area has recessed cans. Any advice?

What Code? The National Electrical Code does not limit height unless water is involved.

Re: Ceiling height code?

in general the minimum height for a habitable room is 7'-6". A non-habitable room like a half bath or closet can be 7'.
In a non-commercial space I never heard of a code for light fixture height, but then I never had it come up. If the 7' is in one area like a corner or bulkhead it probably would be allowed.
I guess I'm not quite clear on what you are doing.

Wow. That's gonna put the light bulbs in those wall sconces mighty close to an 8' ceiling, let alone a 7' 6" ceiling. ;)

And I'm gonna have to cut a hole in the dining room ceiling to get that chandelier raised up into the attic.

Hmmmmm.......What about the light over the pool table?????

Assuming your pool table is in the basement......just dig a pit and lower it in. :D
