Cedar shingles under aluminum siding

I am taking the aluminium siding off my house and finding old cedar shingles in terrific condition.  Have the holes in the shingles from the nails that held up the siding challenged the integrity of the shingles?  Can I just let the shingles live out their life or do I need to paint the house or do something to protect them due to these holes?  Insite would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: Cedar shingles under aluminum siding

I am so glad that you are removing that old junk that just ruins a nice house. Of course you will have to fill in the holes with a good wood putty. Your local lumber yard can recommend the correct type for cedar. You should not paint the shingles, but stain them instead. Your local paint store will help with that. It all depends on the amount of moisture in the wood. After being under the junk siding, I am sure there is a lot of moisture present. You may have to wait a year to allow everything to dry completely.
