Cape Cod with 6 foot ceilings upstairs

What are my opitions on ceiling height adjustments on a 1 1/2 story 1950s Cape Cod with only 6 foot celings in the upstairs, without ripping off a roof and rebuilding?

The house is a 1 1/2 story Cape built in the 1950s with 2 dog house dormers on the front and a shed dormer on the back 2 bedrooms and a bath are upstairs. The downstairs celeings are 9 feet while the upstairs are 6 foot with linolumn flooring. Do the cape houses have any leeway with raising the celeing without ripping the roof off? Is there anyway to know if the celeings were built lower then they had to be without gutting the upstairs. If I ripped out the current ceilings in these rooms what am I likely to find above them?
