can't get water to run in kitchen sink

hello. my problem is our kitchen sink. whenever we turn on the water, nothing comes out until the count of five. it then stops running till we count to five again, then makes a loud thumping sound before the water runs again. if we turn on the faucet and nothing comes out, we turn it off and it takes about two seconds for another thump like it's catching up to the turn off. we thought it might have been air in the pipes but we have no problem with our bathroom or laundry in the basement. any suggestions?

thank you.

Do you have a spray wand associated with this faucet?

What kind of faucet do you have? How old is your faucet? Is this a new problem?

Sounds like the diverter for the hose spray is hanging up.

That's what I was thinking John. So how does it get fixed? Aside from replacement?

Most faucets have replaceable diverters. If he could tell me the make I could advise him how to go about it.

all i know is that the sprayer has never worked since we moved in 3 years ago. i would venture to say that the faucet and sprayer are more than likely over ten years old. when i tried the sprayer for the first time, all that came out was a drip. will this problem be easy to fix? thank you.

Yes, its an easy fix. Buy a new faucet.

Before replacing the faucet, I think that finding out why the diverter never worked in at least 3 years is also important.

What kind of pipes do you have? copper, galvanized or other?

You could have a problem in your wall nipples, angle stops and supply lines to the faucet.

If your pipes, nipples, angle stops and supply lines are OK, then it's the faucet.

Why is it important to know? because if you just replace the faucet and the problem was somewhere else, it will happen again.

Please report back.

Chances are it is a easy fix,but I need to know the make faucet you have to be able to help you.

not sure of the make. can't find anything on it to tell me. looks like an american standard tho. the cheapest one you could use. landlord is not one for putting money into it. it is stainless steel with the hot and cold water handles that are plastic and look like those cut crystals. almost like what belongs in a bathroom. i watched the hose when i turned the faucet off and on and it bounces when it thumps. the sprayer is white.
