Can you help me determine what is this outlet for?

I found this weird looking wall outlet in a middle of the living room wall in a 1940's condo I am thinking about buying.
Do you know what is it for?

Thanks,

Andrew

That's a 220 VAC 30 Amp outlet, most likely for a window air conditioner or space heater.

It is a 20amp not 30amp receptacle. Agree with Jack on the rest.

One should always re-read one's own post before submitting:o. Yes it is indeed 220VAC 20 Amp outlet. Another possible use may have been a tanning bed.

i think they're usually rated for 250v actually.

2-pole 3-wire 6-20R. i just happen to know this because we removed one that used to supply a through the wall unit.

Thank you all very much! This makes perfect sense since there is no central air in this unit. The previous owner probably had a big window unit ...

Thanks again!
