can heat pump efficiency be improved?

Would encasing the exterior portion of a heat pump in a small greenhouse improve efficiency in temps below freezing? Is it safe or could it potentially damage the unit?

Re: can heat pump efficiency be improved?

Any enclosure for a heat pump needs to allow for the free exchange of outside air around the unit. Enclosing it with a greenhouse wouldn't work.
Theoretically if the the sun kept the interior of the greenhouse warm enough it could raise the efficiency of the unit. The heat pump is always cooling the air and at night and cloudy days it would make the inside of the greenhouse colder than the outside air.
