Cambridge Part 7

In the middle of watching the episode and they just finished putting in the membrane in the shower. I am confused. They put in radiant tubing for floor heat and then put in that styrofoam shower base. Won't that block any heat put out by the radiant from moving up and warming the floor except right by the drain and around the outer edge of the pan? I am not a thermal engineer, but a heat break between the heat source and the intended recipient of the heat seems wrong.

The membrane is to prevent leaks! An "R" is just a measure of heat transmission over time. A higher value just means it takes longer for the energy to pass through. With that said, the shower pan will get warm, but will just take more time but probably less time than if you poured 400-500 pounds of mud on the membrane!
