Building a new home - your advice

Hi, I'm new to TOH Insider, but have been watching TOH and ATOH for years.  I am hoping to start building a house from the foundation up in Maine this spring.  The builder has invited me to assist, which I intend to do as much as I can, because I think it's a great opportunity, and I get to be there when questions come up.  I have and architect working on drawings, and the plans for this house have been ongoing for years, so a lot of thought has gone into this so far.  I have a reputable builder who has built many houses in this area of Maine in an over 30-year career, and has a sterling reputation in the area.

My most important question at this point is:  What advice do you have for someone who has never built a house from scratch?  My biggest concern is that there is something I'm not thinking about because I've never done this before.  What is the most important thing I could be missing, based on your experience?

Thanks for your advice.

Use the highest quality material that you can find. Insist on everything above the minimal standard. No plastic anything.
