Broken Ring

I recently decided to install an overhead light in my family room and discovered that the house is wired with 3 ring final circuits of 10-3 with ground. I went ahead with the install on one of the rings, but now have a break in the ring and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Everything comes down to a wall box behind a switch plate where the ring feeds off to the light, a spur, and the through line. I can't seem to get power to the through line, it has a black-white common and red. I'm completely lost, so any help is appreciated, this is my last stop before an electrician.

Re: Broken Ring

Do you mean 3 wire Romex?   Is the light controlled from more than one switch?  If so, there could be a bad 3-way switch.  Any photos?

Oh!  Ok.  Ring circuits are a UK wiring method.  I understand now. ( I am in USA )  Can a lighting load be run off of a ring circuit?  I thought it was just for recepticle outlet loads.
