In the midst of our demolition/renovation of a 1920 house in NE Tennessee, we have uncovered (oh joy!) 3 bracket chimneys. The 18 foot studs holding them up are very tired and warped and about to snap and since we have no need for them (the chimneys), I am going to remove them. I've already had roofers remove the stacks from above the roof (it's way to high and steep for me to have done it myself), but now I am going to dismantle the rest from the attic, the 2nd floor and down to the top half of the first floor where they start (20+ feet of brick per chimney, ugg!). Any suggestions or words of advice from anyone with experience with this? I am a little concerned that gentle whacking to dislodge the bricks might tip the whole thing over (in the attic) or cause the studs in the cellar to fail catastrophically from the vibration. My other question is this: does anyone have suggestions on how to best move a ton of bricks from an attic with only a ladder access (with only two people). Any clever Rube Goldberg contraptions out there? Thanks!
