black, greasy residue in bathtub

Whenever we use the bathtub/shower, floating, black particles appear. When drained, they stick to the tub and when wiped, they smear and must be removed with a grease-cutting solution. We have copper piping throughout and connected to gas water heater.

Since it only appears whenever the tub/shower is used then perhaps there may be a rubber "o" ring or washer or seal in your diverter or valve assembly that's deteriorating.
