best way to remove mortar from salvaged bricks

What is the best way to remove mortar from salvaged bricks? Does it help to soak in cold or hot water? should I do it when bricks are frozen? what about using a air hammer with a chisel. Any tricks or advice would be greatly appreciated. Are there any good youtube vids on this?

Depending on the amount of mortar on the bricks, the condition and age of the bricks or the amount of time on your hand, you can safely do it with a cold chisel and a mason hammer. Gently tap on the mortar with these two tools, a long and slow process. Some bricks will break, for sure, so be ready.

Sometimes it's cheaper to replace the bricks with new ones, you do the math.

If it's old lime mortar, it will often pop off easily with just a brick hammer. If it's portland mortar, it will usually take a good amount of the brick with it when you break it off. :(

The traditional way is to use brick hammers and a boatload of patience. You can also use a wet saw if you can get one that cuts deeply enough.

Howdy, i have removed a little old mortar with light hammer taps to it while supporting the brick on an old scrap of cement. Having the mortar overhang the edge of the cement below woks real goo breaking less brick and less force needed to remove the mortar. But on old brick have not tried wetting it- has anyone?

Anyone make a bagged premix lime& white cement sand mortar mix?
