Basement leaks and cracking tile

My mom is disabled and lives with me. Her house in another state has had some leaking in the basement. As a result, some of the floor tiles have cracked. I know the house is more than 40 years old so I suspect the tiles contain asbestos compounds and shouldn't be removed. I want to go there over the holiday and do all the repair work myself. How do I tile over the existing tiles? Someone suggested placing a layer of thinset over the whole floor. What I've read about thinset suggests that using a self leveling compound might be better; but, laborious and I need to do this work myself to control the expenses. Could I simply use the self leveling compound or thin set to fill in the missing tiles and cracks then cover it all with a new tile floor? Please let me know your recommendation.
