Good you figured it out before a full back up. My in laws had that happen. A foot or two of sewage laden water in the basement is no picnic or bed of roses. :eek:

The city guys reckon it is a collapsed "riser". The road out front get torn up today!

I may be late adding this, but if you don't have one I would go ahead and have a backflow preventer installed on the main line. If you need it just once it will more than pay for itself, plus it's becoming a common code item these days.
