my old house has a basement drain its a trap drain.it is rusted and the cover wont fit right the new pvc cover wont fit the old drain opening.is there a way to fix it so i don't get a smell without digging up the drain and replacing this trap drain..need help

I've also seen it suggested to pour a little vegetable oil in the trap. It will float on top and deter the evaporation on the water.
thanks all...i put water down the drain every night..this drain the trap takes water from my washer and shower as well as a sink i don't think the lid fits right as the top of the drain pipe is rusted and wont hold water
