awkward space to be redone in bathroom closet

When I bought my Old House, the closet in the upstairs bathroom provided practically no usable space. It is an awkward setup, as the sloping back wall of the closet is the ceiling over a staircase underneath. There was one big shelf in the middle, with a few homemade shelving units at the back that were nearly impossible to get to.

I have taken everything out so I can see the space I have to work with, but I have no idea how to efficiently use what I have. I am not averse to removing the closet door altogether and replacing it with cabinet doors, or adding a slide-out hamper at the bottom.

But I would really like to hear some ideas from the other forum members, as to what all to put inside. You can see pictures of the closet at these links:

Thanks in advance for any and all ideas!

In the pictures it looks like the slop is a fairly new modification and not near original. Curious about what's on the other side and why it was done.
