Attic vapor barrier importance?

So we just bought a 1961 Booker ranch in the swampy state of Delaware.

During the home inspection the inspector pointed out that the attic could benefit from some additional insulation blown in. Currently there is about 6” of what I guess is cellulose. As I was prepping the attic I noticed that there was no vapor barrier under the blown in insulation.

My wife thinks I am crazy, but I feel I need to remove all of the old insulation and install batts with a vapor barrier.

Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

6" deep is not deep enough for the east coast. Add more insulation. You don't need to remove your old insulation, unless damaged.
