asbestos in plaster

We are contemplating buying a 1947 gambrel colonial. We have heard a lot of talk about asbestos being used in plaster between 1940 and the late 1970's and that a simple thing like putting a nail in a wall can release the asbestos. Our plan would be to restore the home and eventually add on. Do we need to be concerned about the plaster walls in this home? Can we rip the walls out ourselves? How do we know if we would need asbestos abatement?
