Are electronic water softeners any good?

Our Ecowater tank type water softener leaks sometimes when it regenerates. The service people have made several service calls, replaced some parts and even taken the unit into their shop for evaluation and repair. It still leaks. The moisture tends to collect where it can damage some framing members. The softener can not be relocated. In a recent Home Depot ad I noticed an electronic water softener. It has an electronic control unit and looks like an inductive coil of wire wrapped around the service entry water line. Our city water is 12 - 13 grains of hardness and the ad says that the electronic unit will handle up to 19 grains. Is anyone using an electronic softener and does anyone have any experience with one? Any info would be much appreciated.
