Applying light stucco

Thanks to everyone's advice I have almost completed drywalling 2 rooms and skim-coated my entire hallway, after removing the old wallpaper, and cleaning the walls. All looks good and I got pretty good at the finishing. However, the hallway still has some sanding left and I am concerned about blemishes showing through. I have a nylon-looped paint roller and I tried applying spackle with it on an extra piece of drywall. It went on well and lightly textured, which I liked. My question is this: Should I add primer to the spackle before I apply it and then paint it or should I just apply the spackle, paint on the primer and then apply the paint> The texture is light enough that I don't think painting will be a problem but what is the suggested process. Hate to screw up what appears to be a job done well so far. Woman really can do this.:)
