The subject says it all. Really old windows, really old putty that rock hard. would like to save as much of the old glass as possible before restoring the frames (double hung sash) So. Any ideas for softening up this stuff?
Allot more time of allot of elbow grease and care when removing it. The old stuff on my windows came off pretty easy with a putty knife.
Heat, not to much or you'll crack the glass
A heat gun or heat plate will soften old putty. You will rarely crack the glass if you use reasonable care.
Rockler.com advertises a tool for your drill that acts as a router and runs along the mullions routing out the putty without disturbing the glass. The item costs about $20.00. Sorry, I don't remember the name of it.
