Antique Brass Door Handles

I am attempting to refinish the doors in my 100+ year old house, the last in a long line of projects. I feel really silly, but I can't get the door handles off. I have unscrewed all the screws I can see, but they still won't come off. Anybody have any suggestions? I really dont' want to work around them and most of them need to have paint removed from them. Thanks!

Try unscrewing them. On some old door knobs the shaft that goes through the door is threaded and the knob is turn on and then held inplace with a set screw.

Thanks for the help. I actually got it worked out. They weren't threaded (my neighbor suggested that). After I took out all the screws and still couldn't get anything off (please don't laugh) I ended up getting really frustrated and hitting it with a soft mallet. Well, that knocked something loose and I found a hidden pin. With a skinny poker, I could get the pin out and now all is well. Hopefully I can do this on the remainder of the doors without the mallet.
