Alpine ceiling dilemma

I have a 2' x 4' paneled drop celing which needs remodeling badly.
I would like to create an alpine type effect with pine plank appearance running the 28' length,
and 4" x 4" faux wood beams across the 16' width, on 4' centers, hanging on the existing rails.
Armstrong, among others of course, makes drop panels and they make faux wood planks,
but only to nail to rafters, no wood designs available in 2' x 4' panels.
I've considered very thin flooring planks, or gluing wood-like linoleum to light ceiling panels, or
cutting up 4' x 8' wall paneling, or getting wood veneer to adhere to inexpensive honeycomb panels,
even wood pattern wallpaper on a smooth fiberboard.
On a social security income, the faux beams, at $120 bucks each, will about wipe me out.
450 sq. ft. of planking is far beyond the budget, even veneer is expensive.
What other alternatives could be considered for the ceiling effects?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
