Adding insulation to attic

The insulation in my attic (what little there is) is what appears to be loose fill. It looks like shredded gray material. If I want to add more insulation to the attic do I have to add more of what is there or could I place bat insulation over it? Thanks!

Re: Adding insulation to attic

Insulation is insulation so you can do pretty much what you want as long as you don't block the vents. You can use more loose fill of any type or batts. You can put the batts on top or remove the loose fill and put the batts down and then use the loose fill over the batts and to fill in any gaps.

The latter is how I would do it, but it's up to you.
