I am buying a 1950'a ranch house that has original cork flooring in the hallway. I would like to keep it but it is rather dirty. The present owners said they used vegetable oil to try & clean it. I am thinking that was not a good idea. Does anybody know how I can clean this floor as it is pretty cool & I would like to keep it.
Thanks.

You are correct, using veggie oil is not a good idea. Use only a special cleaner, just for cork flooring.
You can carefully sand it down, bearing in mind it is really soft, and then shellac it. You can test for shellac with denatured alcohol, if it was shellacked in the past, the new will melt into the old.
